What was your first job?

My first job was in high school working as a page at my local library. The best part of the job was working the Friday evening and Saturday morning shifts because the librarian let me take home all the new magazines to read overnight.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

One of my favorite parts of my current role is supporting the arts and libraries units across campus. There are so many amazing arts-related events going on across campus year-round. I majored in art history and have a degree in library science, so I feel a personal connection to the work.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Baking bread. I have been baking challah for years, and I recently learned how to bake sourdough bread. I enjoy sharing my newfound knowledge, sourdough starter, and loaves with friends and family.

What are you reading now?

I just bought Buckeye, by Patrick Ryan, to read while I'm on vacation. It's a multigenerational novel that follows two families from the end of World War II through the late 20th century. If you're wondering about the title, yes, it is set in Ohio.

What would be the first thing you'd do if you won the lottery?

I would buy a lake house in Northern Michigan so I could spend my summers kayaking and hiking in the woods.

What was your first job?

I worked at an ice factory stacking tons of bags of ice onto pallets for eventual delivery to gas stations and grocery stores around the state. The work was cold, the money was great, and the work was exhausting. I loved every minute of it!

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I went to Ohio University and ended up working in their call center for most of my four years in Athens. I started out as a student caller and worked my way up to call room supervisor before graduating. It started out as a way to earn some beer money and ended up being my career—who’d have thought!?

If you could live in any state, which state would you pick?

Colorado, for sure. I love hiking, hunting, skiing, spending time outdoors, and I don’t mind the cold and snow. Bring on the mountains!

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I wanted to be an assistant director in the movie business—went to college for it and everything. I worked in the business for about two years before I decided it wasn’t for me. Turns out, not knowing where your next job is coming from or where it will be is really stressful!

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

I would say, “You’re looking for a career, not a lifestyle. Something that is stable, healthy, keeps you in one place, with the same people, that doesn’t make you miserable.” I had to learn that the hard way, but that’s okay because now I have a job that makes me happy, I work with awesome people, and I come home to my wife and my cat and my own bed every day. I can’t ask for much more than that!

What was your first nonprofit job?

I was hired as a temp to do gift processing, data entry, and issue acknowledgement letters part time by a tiny, rare disease organization. This eventually led to being hired directly as their full-time development coordinator.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

When I learned about prospect research, I knew it would be the perfect next upward move for me. This was achieved when I was hired by the Ohio Living Foundation for my current role.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

The likeliest next destination I’m thinking of is Mexico, primarily due to how much closer it is than other places I dream of visiting. I’ve seen very little of the Americas apart from the USA and Ontario. But in terms of where I most greatly wish to go, China would be at the top of my list.

What would be the first thing you’d do if you won the lottery?

Pay off my student loans in full.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

I’d probably spend most of my time on gardening, woodworking, reading, kayaking and hiking when the weather is pleasant, listening to and collecting music, and expanding my modest art collection. I’d take some language and music classes, and I’d also make time to volunteer. Of course, a certain amount of time and money would also be budgeted for personal philanthropy.

What was your first job?

My first official job was as a ticket taker at a movie theater. Looking back, I think it was my earliest experience with prospect research. I would make a game out of guessing which movie people were going to see and I couldn't help but notice patterns, like if they had a new partner.

What was your first nonprofit job?

My first role in the nonprofit sector was at Playhouse Square as a Ticket Services Representative—a natural step up from being a ticket taker. I found immense satisfaction in resolving patrons' issues so they could fully enjoy the performance. It was fun watching thousands of people having a good time.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

I would tell my younger self (2.5 yrs ago) to never hesitate to reach out to colleagues at OPRN. OPRN and APRA became my lifeline and, over time, my close friends. It’s a vital reminder that whether you're in a one-person shop or part of a large team, you are never alone in this field.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

I would dedicate my time and resources to running a comprehensive dog rescue sanctuary. My dream would be to create a farm-like environment with on-site veterinarians, behavioral trainers, and a dedicated staff. Dogs give so much unconditional support to humans; it would be my mission to give them a safe, nurturing place to thrive while they wait for their forever homes.

Would you rather sail or van life around the world?

Van life, without a doubt! The idea of being a digital nomad and having the freedom to explore the U.S. is incredibly appealing. I have a friend who lives that lifestyle, and I'm always inspired by his sense of adventure and discovery.

What was your first job?

My first job was working for my dad. He was a lawyer, so I ran paperwork to the nearby courthouses and made A LOT of copies.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

Like so many folks in prospect development, by chance! I needed a job after college so I didn't have to move back to my parents' house. I had a student worker position in the advancement office at Pitt and they had an opening for a prospect researcher. It turned out I loved it and it's become my career!

What are you reading now?

I just finished The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep. It was a great, interesting read! I needed a book set in New Zealand for a reading challenge and it might be my favorite book of the year!

What movie can you rewatch over and over again?

I can't pick just one! Jurassic Park and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions only in our house!) - I watch LotR about once a year and Jurassic Park whenever it's on tv.

Does your current car have a name? What is it?

Bertie (short for Roberta) - she's named after the t-rex animatronic in Jurassic Park

Update all business affiliation data with proper job titles that then magically continuously refreshes.

What would be the first thing you'd do if you won the lottery?

Start a foundation that gives solely to overhead costs – making sure staff are provided professional development opportunities, upgrades to office equipment, and fund the things that make lives of nonprofit professionals easier!

Do you think iced coffee should only be consumed in the summer or all year round?

All year round and anytime of the day. My love for iced coffee knows no season.

What childhood rule was most difficult for you to follow?

Stop being so nosey, which really comes in handy nowadays.

What is your favorite board game?

It is so hard to pick one, so my top three are Ticket To Ride, Seven Wonders, and Dominion.

I am a self-proclaimed “Disney Geek”. I could give a 45-minute presentation on Walt Disney World travel without thinking. In fact, someone may need to cut me off . My husband and I and our two kids have traveled to Disney World over 15 times. Heading back for Spring Break!

When/Where was your first APRA conference?

I am new to the career of Prospect Research, so I haven’t had the opportunity to attend a conference yet. But, I look forward to hopefully attending this year.

What is your favorite board game?

My husband and I love playing board games. So, it is hard to pick just one. But, I would have to say, Catan is our favorite. We have also bought many of the expansions to go with it such as Cities & Knights and Traders & Barbarians. We recently got the Seafarers expansion at Christmas and are enjoying that version.

What is the last TV show you binged watched?

The last TV show we binge watched is Yellowstone, as well as the spinoffs 1883 and 1923.

Are you an early bird or night owl?

I am definitely an early bird. I wake up at 4:30am everyday and go to the gym before work. But, if you are trying to reach me after 9pm, I am most likely sleeping already.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Build good bridges; don't burn them. Every person you meet could potentially be the key to a new opportunity. You never know how that interaction may fit into your future, both personally and professionally.

What could you give a 45-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Genealogy research. I am absolutely obsessed. I even worked for our local history library for a few years as a young woman—nothing like getting paid for your hobby.

When/where was your first Apra/OPRN conference?

I attended my first in-person conference last year, OPRN, at the Columbus Zoo.

Where's the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

I would love to go to Niagara Falls, both the US and Canada side. I am utterly obsessed with oceans and waterfalls. It's not just the beauty that attracts me; maybe it's the soothing sounds—the rhythm of it. There is also something about the energy and possibly the danger of them and how they are completely out of our control that both scares me and calms me down at the same time.

What is your favorite season?

Summer is definitely my favorite season. The days are longer, and there are so many more things to do socially in the summer, like fairs, festivals, and BBQs. Also, I love gardening. Whether it is indoors or out, flowers or food, it keeps me "grounded", LOL. Gardening is like a tranquil retreat for me. The repetition and solitude are very meditative. Watching things grow and produce and then preserving that food to share with family and friends is a tremendous source of pride for me.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect development?

My best friend and OPRN member Jenny Sowash and I applied for seasonal jobs at the Zoo while we were students at OSU. Jenny was hired as a seasonal and has made a career there. I interviewed for a Zoo seasonal job but was called back to my OSU student job. A few years later, a position opened up at the Zoo in the Development Office running the Adopt An Animal program and other fundraising programs. I was there for 9 years which gave me a foundation for fundraising and non-profits. I went on to positions at Habitat for Humanity, Franklin Park Conservatory, The Ohio State University, Goodwill Columbus, Cristo Rey Columbus. I returned to Ohio State in 2022 as a Prospect Research Consultant.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Indianapolis in 2023

What skill would you like to master?

Kitchen knife skills. I love watching Chopped, Top Chef and all kinds of cooking shows and wish I could chop vegetables like a chef!

What is your favorite board game?

Scrabble

What is the last TV show you binged watched?

The West Wing. I binge watch this at least twice a year.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect development?

I was a lost college graduate who had no idea what to do next. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity by way of a friend to work for a small nonprofit that needed help with database management after acquiring another nonprofit. I have always enjoyed meeting donors during events and a few years into my career, I learned I could get to know donors without ever having to do the “ask”. I truly enjoy prospect research, learning about my community and the impact it can make on an organization.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

You are always networking! You never know when someone you previously met or worked with can help you in the future.

If you could complete one work-related task with a wave of your hand, what task would you choose?

Updating occupation information in real time!

What’s a random fact you recently learned?

In 1892, the first rollercoaster at Cedar Point opened and with a top speed of 10mph.

What is the last TV show you binged watched?

Ted Lasso and I loved the ending.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect development?

After graduate school, I was accepted as a development fellow at a foundation supporting a local hospital. This position gave me exposure to all aspects of a fundraising shop and the experience helped me define what I wanted to focus on (I originally thought I wanted to plan events). As with many shops, there was not a dedicated research team, so I wasn’t able to do a formal rotation. I think I fell into the field because I showed an interest in knowing more about the people who donated and because I had some background in analytics so I was able to collect information from many sources, summarize, and present usable information. After my fellowship ended, I moved on to my first prospect research-focused job and I haven’t looked back!

What could you give a 45-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

I am a huge Peloton fan and could give a presentation on Peloton/the instructions with no preparation, lol. I bought a bike at the very start of the pandemic after trying it in a showroom in Los Angeles (I caved to peer pressure). I had never cycled before buying the bike. I became hooked, and I have done a class on the platform (bike, walk, run, yoga, medication) each week since.

Are there any books, podcasts, or courses that have changed the way you approach your daily work?

I listen to a podcast produced by American Public Media called Marketplace - https://www.marketplace.org/shows/marketplace/. It comes out daily and focuses on business and economic news, but no degree or finance background is required. It’s been helpful in keeping up to date on the economy and factors that impact philanthropy.

How do you approach traveling on vacation? Do you make an itinerary or just explore?

I am planner so I love a good itinerary. However, my husband is more of a “go with the flow” type person. We compromise, and typically I will plan one thing in each city we visit and then leave the rest unplanned.

Is chili a soup?

I consider chili to be more akin to a stew than a soup. However, my overall view of chili may be a bit controversial since I grew up eating Cincinnati Chili. My dad’s side of the family is from Cincinnati, and I have many memories at Skyline and being in the kitchen helping my mom make homemade chili.

I have a background in investigative research, so it was perfect for me! The depth of Philanthropy is spectacular. I enjoy the people I meet, the skills I am developing, and the impact fundraising has on the community.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Always be willing to learn anything, even if it doesn’t pertain to your field. You never know when it might come in handy!

What skill would you like to master?

I would like to master the science of research. What I mean by that is, learning efficient techniques, the best software, and the organization skills it takes to create an excellent project.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

Romania! My parents are from there and we use to visit every other summer. I haven’t been back since before COVID, so I miss the food, culture, and beautiful views.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

I’ve got two:

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If someone recognizes a special skillset or quality you have (that you may or may not recognize yourself) and offers you an opportunity, take it; work where the culture is going to value what you uniquely bring to the workplace.
I think one of the best things I’ve heard recently is when dealing with a complicated email exchange (especially if with a passive aggressive personality), pick up the phone.

If you could complete one work-related task with a wave of your hand, what task would you choose?

Entering data into database.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

How to do a meaningful and strategic profile.

How do you approach traveling on vacation? Do you make an itinerary or just explore?

Hybrid. I try to have a few key destinations but don’t like to let the spontaneity of the trip be spoiled with too long of a checklist.

What are you reading now?

Just finished reading both Spare by Prince Harry and Palace Papers by Tina Brown.

Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Hall and Oates (child of the 70’s!).

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I wanted to be an artist… singing, acting, dancing, painting, writing poetry… all the things! Sadly, I have no performing arts talents. I still occasionally write, but only for myself to “find the truth” as Madeleine L’Engle used to say.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

The obvious answer: spend more time with my kiddos and travel! Honestly, I have always thought that if I didn’t have to work I would still work in some capacity – part-time or as a volunteer, but would feel the need to do something to help others.

What are you reading now?

The Scholomance Series by Naomi Novik – Just finished this series and LOVED it! If you enjoyed Hunger Games, the Divergent trilogy or Harry Potter, I highly recommend this series! Literally read the first two books over a weekend.

What’s a random fact you recently learned?

An octopus has nine brains! My boys told me this and I couldn’t believe that it was true… but it is… these kids are fascinating.

Favorite way to reenergize during the day?

Take a walk – move around – dance in the kitchen. My brain starts working better after I start moving my body. Love to have walking meetings!

Proactive Projects Roundtable Notes

General Notes:

Proactive gets pushed to the back burner many times. Some try to use “offensive calendaring” to block days/time for proactive work.
Gift officers want new names but aren’t always following-up or feedback is informal.

Metrics/Tracking:

For some teams, proactive identification is not a specific department/team goal or metric but keep track for personal year-end reporting. May vary by team member based on individual roles.
Some track proactive identification but less formal procedures or policies or expectations for gift officer follow-up. Typically, after a period of no real outreach the follow-up is simply “drop assignment.” Cincinnati Children’s started a more formal “blitz” process (scheduled work-flow in NXT) where each newly assigned prospect is mailed, emailed, called, etc. so many times before they can be dropped. Based on capacity and giving levels, more outreach attempts are expected if higher rating and/or giving.
Building a dashboard (very new)

Identification of individual names:

Review internal lists on regular basis: new donors, donors over $500, volunteers, event attendees, DAF donors, IRA donors
Review names associated with affiliations of current board members or donors
Review WealthEngine / iWave screenings – donors to similar/relevant organizations (arts org for Art school; donors to pediatric cancer organizations)
livealumni and RelSci mentioned
Peer review of lists by board members but it can be time consuming and often hard to get consistent follow-up from volunteers
News alerts/other alerts can generate an overwhelming number to read through unless very specific criteria. Many times never get reviewed! Using vendors such as aidentified or Insightful can help with curating/targeting alerts (news around IPOs, stock transactions, investment, relationship mapping).
Names presented generally meet certain criteria (capacity, giving, connection). Very rare to get gift officers to follow-up on high-capacity, lower connection prospects but depends on department/unit and need for new prospects.

How are names presented/shared with gift officers:

One-on-one meetings with gift officers
Regular meetings with all gift officers
Regular meetings with just lead gift officers. Larger meetings can turn into free-for-all discussions.
Generally basic information is shared

Corporate/foundation prospecting:

Review lists of vendors, co-op/intern program companies, local top companies, large employers/campus recruiting, alumni/donors in C-Suite roles
Sponsors/funders of similar events/organizations
FoundationSearch or Foundation Directory (some public libraries offer access) for grants research
RFP emails/newsletters for foundation funders: GrantStation Insider or Philanthropy News Digest RFPs

Completely by happenstance! The Director of Advancement Services at the university where I was working approached me about the prospect research opening in her office. I had never worked in advancement and had only a vague idea of what prospect research was, but I was ready for a new challenge. Over two decades later, I’m still working in prospect development!

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

Travel...and ensure that I never, ever, ever saw snow again.

What is your favorite board game?

I don’t have a favorite board game, but I really enjoy building jigsaw puzzles!

If you were offered a round trip to the moon, would you take it?

Do I get to travel aboard the Millennium Falcon?

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

Like many, I kinda just fell into it. After I got my degree, I didn’t want to immediately jump into a 9-5 office job so I took a gap year and volunteered for AmeriCorps. Getting that experience in nonprofit inspired me to look for similar opportunities. I found one in event management for a public organization setting up and tearing down events. It was a good job but not what I was looking for. Eventually, I came across a prospect research position. It was a newly established role and an opportunity to build out a prospect development office from the ground up. I applied and got it and ever since I’ve stayed in prospect development within higher education.

What are you reading now?

For pleasure, The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy. For work, The Book of Crypto by Henri Arslanian

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

To share advice that a mentor once gave me; no one ever goes broke betting on themselves.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

Singapore! I studied there in college and had planned a trip to go back and see former classmates and coworkers but the pandemic put that on hold.

Is pineapple an acceptable pizza topping?

If you enjoy it yes. For me? No. Never. Absolutely not.

In the mid-1990s I was attending OSU to get my master’s degree and saw an ad in the campus newspaper for a student job in the Prospect Research office. The duties of the job including reading local newspapers and business journals to collect articles on the alumni and donors. Eventually a full-time prospect research position became available, so I took it and never left!

How do you approach traveling on vacation? Do you make an itinerary or just explore?

I research a lot of details before arriving. I like to go to new places so don’t want to miss a thing while I am there!

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

Operate a beagle rescue organization

What skill would you like to master?

Playing a musical instrument like the piano or mandolin

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Hands down a personal housekeeper. I have a husband who loves to cook and drive but never cleans!

Do you have any side hustles?

I am the owner of Vintage Promotions which runs an arts and crafts show called ChristmasFair at the Ohio Expo Center every November the weekend before Thanksgiving.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I have worked at the Columbus Zoo for over thirty years. I have been lucky enough to be in the correct spot at the right time and have been able to grow with the Zoo. I love to learn new software and to figure out how to do new things. I went from being the mail clerk to running the computer helpdesk when everyone was learning how to use Windows and Office products. I volunteered to take a class on Raiser’s Edge and somehow I ended up running the donor database and researching donors. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to learn and grow. Always be willing to learn!

What are you reading now?

I am a voracious consumer of audio books. I download them from the library and usually listen to at least two a week.

What do you listen to on your commute?

Audio Books!

What is your favorite dessert?

Anything chocolate and ala mode.

What skill would you like to master?

Plumbing! Dripping faucets are so annoying.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I am part of a great team who make coming to work everyday fun and interesting. You never know what you will see at the Zoo!

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I can take a walk through the hospital and see every color, shape and age of face, hear several different languages being spoken and feel all the things: the empathy, anger, fear, caring, love, joy and hope in the people I pass. I’ve never worked for a more diverse organization – I’m very grateful to be of service to my community through my small role.

What was your first nonprofit job?

I was out of college and in my 20’s and my younger sister got involved in AmeriCorps. Her experience was my first adult view into the world of nonprofits. I had never really had an interest or explored the role of nonprofit organizations in a community before. Her involvement inspired me to look for a job in nonprofit work. I accepted a job at LifeShare, organizing community and corporate blood drives for local hospitals. I’ve been working for nonprofit organizations ever since.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

“Whatever you are, be a good one.” The quote has been attributed to different people over the years, but I read it on a postcard in a gift shop. It really resonated with me at that moment in time. As silly as it may sound, reading and being reminded of those words created a shift in my perspective on work and life. It also continues to help me recognize and appreciate effort, focus and commitment in accomplishing difficult things.

What song always gets you out on the dance floor?

Do I have to choose just one? Nostalgia wins the day on this question - Push it, by Salt-N-Pepa. Every. Single. Time.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

I love clean eating, but it is so much work. Washing food, chopping food, measuring, spices… then all those dishes. I’d rather have a personal chef. Especially if they will shop for the food too. There’s nothing that I enjoy less than cooking (except being late… and full-length animated films).

What was your first job?

I worked as an Admissions Counselor right out of college. It was a fun, high energy job that provided a lot of great experiences. While working that job I got my MA in Arts Administration (non-profit management) which kind of paved the way for my future work in fundraising.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I was hired as an annual giving director and discovered I loved putting together pieces of a puzzle in regards to donors, connections, networking, etc. After a few years in annual giving I became the project person in our office. Now I handle some grant writing, prospect research and any other tasks that come my way. I love the variety – it keeps my job interesting since each day is a little different.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

The Grand Canyon! Our family has taken some amazing trips to national parks (Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Grand Tetons, Acadia) so the Grand Canyon is next on my list to experience. I have two sons and at 11 and 14 they are the perfect ages to explore and hike so we’re trying to squeeze in as many adventures as we can before they grow up.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Personal chef, for sure – I love to eat but would much rather someone else do the cooking…and dishes.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

Don’t worry about climbing the corporate ladder. Go for substance and find something that you believe in and can contribute to – don’t worry about your title. At the end of the day you want to feel good about the work you did, not the title after your name.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

As a child, I wanted to be an elementary teacher. Clearly, I’m not in a classroom with little ones, but I do provide lots of database training for development officers, so I guess I can count that as teaching.

What was your first nonprofit job?

I worked at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on the stewardship and events team, supporting signature events, managing all gift in kind donations and working with grateful patient families. That experience led me to my current role at the UC Foundation in Prospect Development working with our development officers in the academic health and grateful patient space.

What’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

Greece! My husband and I got married in May 2019 and planned a delayed honeymoon to Greece for May 2020. As we all know, life changed drastically in 2020 and we haven’t been able to reschedule yet, so we’re anxiously awaiting exploring the Greek islands!

What song always gets you out on the dance floor?

Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”

Would you rather have your dishes or clothes be magically clean?

Definitely my clothes! My husband is in charge of dishes in our house and I’m in charge of laundry, so I could have the best of both worlds if someone cleaned (and folded!) all our clothes.

What was your first job?

My first job was working at a library helping out with cataloging. I ended up moving to shelving and front desk check out. I think librarians are the smartest people. If they don’t know an answer they certainly know how to find the answer.

Do you have any side hustles?

I have several. I am a pet sitter for many clients and their pets. I specialize in geriatric pets. I am currently sidelined since I fell and have/had 8 broken bones. I also volunteer at a cat shelter and help out doing TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release).

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I love a challenge. I have been doing Prospect Research for 30 years and what I love the most is everything is always changing. I remember having to do research by physically going to the library and using their resources to do reports. I love that I can combine my critical thinking skills with my love of gathering data and a little bit of intuition into raising funds that make a difference.

What song always gets you out on the dance floor?

Since I just spent a ton of money to buy a ticket to go see Duran Duran in Columbus I am going to say any of their songs. I am such a product of 1980’s music.

What are you reading now?

I read a lot. I am in several mystery book clubs. But I am currently reading The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles and my book club book of Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

I have considered myself as a jack of all trades for most of my career which has its benefits. I would tell myself to own your jack of all trades moniker but carve out enough space to become an expert in a specific area.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Never bring your boss a dead possum without the shovel. OK, that may be a little morbid but it was memorable. BTW – he actually used “cat” but there are way too many cat lovers in the prospect research field, so I am taking the liberty to make that change. Apologies to possum lovers.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Leveraging your CRM to automate moves management and donor journeys.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I got into fundraising through my two-years of AmeriCorps service. I served with City Year Cleveland, an education nonprofit dedicated to helping students and schools succeed. I primarily tutored in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and at after school programs, but we also did a work with small community organizations. We often fundraised and looked for in-kind gifts to support our programs. It was a life changing experience for me and led me to first job as a membership and annual fund manager at an environmental nonprofit.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

My favorite thing about where I work is that it is at my alma mater. I started my new position at Bowling Green State University last month. After graduation I moved to the Cleveland area for 16 years. It’s so exciting to be back on campus and share everything I love about BG with my family.

What are you reading now?

From a professional standpoint, I just started reading David Lawson and Lori Hood Lawson’s Big Good: Philanthropy in the Age of Big Data. I am also reading the Bridgerton series. I just started book number five, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. I love historical fiction.

What song always gets you out on the dance floor?

No one could stop me from dancing if Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches and Herb started playing.

Do you think iced coffee should only be consumed in the summer or all year round?

Only in the summer. However, to flip the question around, hot coffee can be consumed all year round. I don’t care if its 110 degrees outside I will have a hot coffee.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

When I was a child I always wanted to be a lawyer. I would watch L.A. Law with my grandparents and I always loved to argue. Even though I didn’t become a lawyer, my sister did!

Do you have any side hustles?

I work on the weekends as a Crisis Assistant at Counseling Center in Wooster, OH. I like helping people and it is an opportunity to give back to the community.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

My first APRA Conference was Anaheim, CA in 2010. It was really exciting to be in California for the 1^st time. I still remember that the weather was PERFECT and I met some wonderful people. It started my love for the conference and eventually I started doing presentations for them.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

I would most likely still do what I do because I love it. I would probably do it part-time or as a consultant so I had time to travel and relax. I think work would be more fun if you can take the necessity out of it.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Personal Chauffeur definitely! I absolutely hate driving with every fiber of my being and would probably go more places and do more things if I did not have to drive.

I was a waitress at Ponderosa in high school. (Yikes, is that giving away my age?)

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I wanted to be the person who trained Shamu and the dolphins at Sea World. Needless to say, I am not not doing that (and am glad I am not, they belong in the wild!)

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. It's not a sign of weakness, it's one of the best ways to learn. Plus, it will help you become better personally and professionally.

Is pineapple an acceptable pizza topping?

Absolutely! It's one of my favorites, can't beat pineapple and green peppers!

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Without a doubt, housekeeper!!!! I enjoy cooking, but hate doing the dishes. I also enjoy driving, and since I work remotely, I rarely have to drive in rush hour traffic.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

Partially by accident and partially because of my first job interview with my boss, Nickie Montesano. I have a Master’s in Art History but was having trouble finding a non-teaching job at a museum. I knew that I wanted to work at some sort of non-profit. So in order to pay the bills, I started working at Akron Children’s as a receptionist on the clinical side. A couple years later, a receptionist position became available at the Foundation. During my interview, Nickie (my-soon-to-be boss) mentioned that I would probably really like prospect research and I should look into it. I had never heard of it before but I was intrigued. After I was hired, Nickie (and the other prospect researchers: Katy Berger and Jenn Ewing) took every opportunity to give me small projects to help me develop my researching skills. I am so lucky to have found this department and to work with such amazing people.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

Just get your foot in the door. I spent a long time thinking I had to immediately get the job I wanted at the place I wanted. Sometimes, you only need to get A job at the place you want. That proves to the organization you really want to work there and it gives them the opportunity to see first-hand how intelligent, hard-working and committed you really are.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

I feel like I should say contemporary art since I have a degree in art history. But I would probably do a presentation on Harry Potter, Jane Austen or some random true crime story.

Would you rather have your dishes or clothes be magically clean?

Dishes. 100%. I have never had a dishwasher and washing the dishes is such a pain. At least, I can do other things while doing the laundry.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

Travel. Travel. Travel.

What was your first job?

In high school I worked at the local park as a recreation assistant and worked in the office, refereed basketball, coached a few teams, and worked as a camp counselor at their sports camp.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I love that my supervisors are exceedingly intelligent, solutions-focused, and good at their jobs. They also give me a huge amount of autonomy while simultaneously expecting results.

What is your favorite dessert?

Campfire Smores ice cream from Mitchells. Imagine a smore. Now imagine it in ice cream. Ribbons of marshmallow, chunks of chocolate, and pieces of graham cracker. Hungry yet?

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

Two things, both of which are VERY cliche: fixing things around my house and philanthropy. I would fix things around my house because it’s generally enjoyable and challenging, but also saves a lot of money. And I would do philanthropy so I could make a measurable difference in the communities that I care about, without having to do all of the hard work.

What was your first job?

I was a volunteer at a hospital and then became a hostess/front end register operator at Sister’s Chicken & Biscuits (if any of you remember that restaurant J). Following graduation from college, I accepted a position to manage a Pathology billing office and was there for about ten years.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I began my career as an administrative assistant for Annual Giving after moving to Columbus. This position transitioned into splitting my role and assisting our director for Corporate and Foundation Relations. My love and connections with our alumni and the business world moved me into my current role as assistant director for Development Research and Prospect Management.

Where’s the next place on your bucket list?

Within the U.S., I would love to travel up the east coast to Maine, or explore the west coast Washington State or Alaska. I visited California and Hawaii a few years ago (pre-pandemic) and wouldn’t mind revisiting again. Anywhere overseas would be exciting…..Iceland, Italy, Greece, Scotland, France, etc.

What skill would you like to master?

I have always wanted to learn to fly a plane or become a pilot.

What was your first job?

I worked summers during college at Star Island Conference Center, which is located on an island 7 miles off the coast of NH and Maine. Around 90 college kids staff the hotel and other buildings with jobs ranging from housekeeping to carpentry workers. Each week staffers entertain the conferees with a talent show.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I like discovering and bringing information to our development officers that help them make a connection with a possible donor or volunteer. It's a whole team effort and it's great to know I had an important part when the team gets a WIN!

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Budgeting and saving money by running your home like a business. We are so busy these days that we forget to take the time to plan a household budget – and stick to it! If we implement routine maintenance for our homes (appliances, HVAC, roof, etc.) and our vehicles we're not constantly playing $$ defense when a disaster hits. So many people don't save or save enough, for retirement, too. We need to bring the goal-setting tools, tips, and tricks we use to streamline our work lives into our home lives. (Hmmm, apparently I could go on and on and on.)

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

I want to visit all the lighthouses on the eastern seaboard. I plan to climb to the top of the lighthouse observation decks in as many as possible. I climbed the 219 steps of the St. Augustine lighthouse last year – whew! America's early maritime history is found in the stories of our many lighthouses. And, well, they're all by the ocean – who doesn't love that?!

Honestly….a bit by accident. I worked in a marketing department for the first three years out of college and had the desire to work for my alma mater. Reaching out, I was connected with the VP of Advancement and my career in advancement was born, have worked in both prospect research and as a fundraiser.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

I have been in higher ed fundraising for 20 years in various capacities. However, I started in prospect research and learned so much from the professionals in the industry through APRA in the early 2000s. It was right around then that I attended my first conference.

How many hours do you get to the airport before a flight?

I suppose it depends on the airport but typically about 90 minutes early.

What is your favorite dessert?

Chocolate… in most any form but preferably in the form of multi-layer chocolate cake.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Personal housekeeper….I am a mom to teenagers…any help I can get would be great!

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I majored in music (viola performance) in undergrad. I was planning on being a professional orchestral musician, but soon realized that wasn’t for me. I also worked in the admissions office as a student worker and really enjoyed it. After graduation, I was trying to figure out where I would go from there and based on my interests, I figured working for either an arts organization or a university would be a good fit. Turns out, 2007 wasn’t a great time to be looking for a job, so I took a temp job working at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) as a department assistant for the biochemistry department. I was eventually hired as a full time employee which opened a lot of doors to employment opportunities at CWRU. I was able to land a job working in the development office for the College of Arts and Sciences which happened to coincide with starting the Master’s of Non-profit Organizations program there. It was an incredible experience being able to directly apply what I was learning to my work. The rest, as they say, is history.

What do you listen to on your commute?

Almost exclusively NPR. It’s one of the only ways I can absorb the news without wanting to tear my hair out.

Would you rather have your dishes or clothes be magically clean?

Dishes. Hands down. It’s like they are never ending.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

Grow an incredible native plant garden and vegetables/herbs, join a rowing club, go on long bike rides, take my daughter all over the country to see/ride on old trains, pick up the viola and piano again and maybe join a community orchestra or chamber group, volunteer for some of the local parks and environmental organizations, become active with the local arts center and work on a bunch of community art projects

What’s a random fact you recently learned?

Frogs shed their skin and then eat it. (Thanks, Ranger Rick!)

I used to be an afterschool care aide/au pair for families in Memphis. Now I beg my coworkers and friends to let me babysit so I still get cute kid time and so they’ll teach me what’s hip and cool these days.

●What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I still don’t know what I want to be… is that a part of why we love PD work? Curiosity about all the things!

●What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

My team really is made of some of the best in the business! I love learning with and from them and “dreaming and scheming” every chance we get.

●When/where was your first Apra conference?

Circa 2015 in New Orleans! Still have the insta pics to prove it! Ha! Met some incredible colleagues who are still in PD making magic happen to this day.

●Is pineapple an acceptable pizza topping?

Oh 100%! I see Mike Ormiston looking to pair it with some other topping and I’d like to recommend pepperoni over ham.

What was your first job?

My first full time job was being a housekeeper for retired nuns. It was like going to work with 80 grandmothers every day! As my first job I also underappreciated the amazing benefits I had working there that I now look back on and think WOW!

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I wanted to be a dentist. I am definitely not doing that but I am ok with that!

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

You mean everyone doesn’t grow up wanting to go into the prospect development field? I worked in the alumni/development office while getting my degree. Then I followed a co-worker to help with a screening project they had just done and instead took over the prospect research role.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I love feeling like I am helping the greater cause of the organization. Having a co-worker go out of their way to thank you for helping them is priceless.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Vegas! I thought it was a great idea to do the New Researcher’s Symposium for a few days followed by the full conference right after. Talk about information overload!

What are you reading now?

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

What skill would you like to master?

I would love to be well versed in Lean Six Sigma.

Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

I have no shame…my go to is for sure Celine Dion! Started at a young age and every once in a while I go back and just belt out the songs while driving alone (I pity anyone that actually has to hear me try to sing her songs).

What was your first job?

Lab Assistant for The Ohio State University Department of Animal Science assisting research studies on dairy cows. There was lots of lab work which aligned with my coursework and I absolutely loved it. There was also lots of field work, capturing bio samples live and in-person at dairy farms and the Select Sires bull farm. As a city girl, that was all very new to me and I didn’t enjoy the cow pastures so much. But, I have some great memories and amazing stories to tell!

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

Take the leap and believe that you can do anything you can imagine – and more.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

I love working from the comfort of my home. And, I’ve invested in creating a workspace that suits my exact needs, wants, moods, and comforts. I enjoy that the remote nature of our work as prospect development professionals allows me to partner with organizations all over the United States. I’m able to select the causes, the missions, the leadership teams that I want to support. It’s so fulfilling and humbling to know that I’m contributing to real impact in an array of communities all over. That’s deeply satisfying.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

I could give a presentation on how to launch and grow your own prospect development business from just a dream to a profitable enterprise. I’d share insights I learned, challenges I encountered, pitfalls to avoid, and best practices to align with success. I’m passionate about showing my prospect development colleagues how to take control of their income and career trajectory.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

While working for Huntington, the desktop personal computer debuted. I was back on campus for homecoming and struck up a conversation with the university president telling him about my work and saying I was looking for a job in the area because the teaching market was too tight in central Ohio and we were about to be engaged; my future wife had a teaching job nearby. He called on Monday and said we need someone who knows something about “those” (desktop PCs—wow, I just really dated myself there…) So, I got the job and relocated to NW Ohio in 1987.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

I still give this advice today—last week, even, while participating on an alumni panel discussion at my alma mater. Learn how to network and form meaningful relationships with others. Know who you can call for advice and assistance in various types of professional, as well as, life decisions. The relationships you form will serve you well for the rest of your life. Then, of course, be kind, welcome all and mentor those who ask for it. (I am a proud Anne E. Mayer Award past recipient.)

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Learn when it’s time to move on.

Do you have any side hustles?

I guess a side hustle is also my hobby, MG sports cars from the 1940’s and 50’s. Granted, it’s an illness—we have five.

What are you reading now?

Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand; a WWII story of survival, resilience and redemption.

What skill would you like to master?

Maybe someday I will learn to weld. However, if my soldering skills are any indication, it will be a challenge.

What would be the first thing you'd do if you won the lottery?

Pay down debt, share with our kids and probably buy more old cars (I hope my wife doesn’t read this…).

What was your first job?

I worked a concession stand at Geauga Lake Amusement Park the summer I turned 14- miss that place!

What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?

Speak up- you are your own best advocate. Do not let anyone push you down or silence you. Things may not always go the way you want but you will never regret saying out loud what you would like to have happen and actively working towards it.

What was your first nonprofit job?

I parlayed a summer working as a conservation manager at a buffalo reserve in Colorado that was managed by the Nature Conservancy into a full-time position with the San Francisco office of the organization…and my career in philanthropy was born!

When/where was your first Apra conference?

I went to the New Orleans conference in 2015 while I was 5 months pregnant with twins! It was hot as heck, and I was as big as a house, but it was all worth it for those beignets.

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

I would travel. I was very fortunate to explore quite a bit before I became a mom, seeing parts of Africa, Europe and South America, but there are still so many places on my bucket list!

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I had been a market analyst and corporate researcher for a number of years before deciding I needed a career change. I went back to school and got a master’s in higher education. During my job search, I came across prospect research positions at a few universities. After looking into what prospect research was all about and seeing that I had all those skills AND a love of higher ed, I applied and ended up where I am now with UA and have been here for 14 years. I never thought I would be a part of the team that asks for donations, but I love the process and the impact we can make in the lives of students and the overall institution.

What do you listen to on your commute?

I listen to Sirius radio. I bounce around several different channels, but mostly stay on comedy stations. I’ve found that laughing on my commute helps me prepare for the day or decompress after. If I am not in the mood to listen to jokes, I listen to music that I can sing along with and hold a 30-minute solo concert in my car while I drive home. Some days it is better than therapy!

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Never say no to anyone looking to talk to you about an opportunity. It never hurts to talk with them and find out more. You can always say no later if the fit is not there for you or them.

Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Sister Hazel. Their music can calm me or lift me up, and there always seems to be a song that is right for those times I am undecided.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Can I have all 3? If I can only pick one, it would be a personal chef. I don’t enjoy meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking. Having someone prepare a healthy, well portioned meal and have grab and go snacks at the ready for me (and do all the dishes), would be amazing!

What was your first job?

I worked as a dishwasher in the dining halls of Miami University, where I am still considered a dishwashing legend. Ask anyone in Oxford, Ohio, who the best dishwasher in Miami University history is, and if they don’t say my name, they’re probably new to town. There’s no need to get upset with this supposed “Oxford resident” that you’re talking to, but c’mon, that was an easy question you asked them.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

I wanted to be a baseball player when I grew up, and although I am now grown but do not play professional baseball, I do think that collecting baseball cards and looking through baseball stats was helpful in spurring my interest in statistics/math, which I use often. I remain willing to sign a team-friendly deal with any baseball club looking for a player with delusions of grandeur.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

My favorite thing about my job is that it frequently offers me opportunities to learn something new. The process of going from ignorance to understanding is rewarding for me, and my coworkers walk me through that process all of the time. Also, my coworkers are my favorite type of teachers – the type with a playful sense of humor.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

I’d like to visit the Pacific Northwest (Portland & Seattle) because I’ve never been to that region of the U.S. and I’ve heard that it’s beautiful. I’d also like to go to Spain because I’m intrigued by their late-night dinners, and I took some Spanish classes, so maybe I can communicate with slightly more ease than I’d be able to in other foreign countries.

Is pineapple an acceptable pizza topping?

I accept it, but it wouldn’t be one of my top choices. I think it would also need to be paired with some other topping, like ham, for me to be into it. Ordering pineapple-only pizza seems like some kind of act of defiance to me, although I’m sure whoever does that is just following their taste buds.

After having a position at an online HS for over a decade, administration changed, and it was time to get a new job. I decided to fill out an application to my alma mater as a coordinator to the VP of Advancement. I was fortunate to receive an offer for the position and learned so much from our VP who was very knowledgeable and a great 'teacher' of advancement. From there, I moved into the Prospect Research position and have not looked back!

If you were so wealthy you didn’t need to work, what would you do with your time?

I would spend time with my grandchildren and work on my many hobbies.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

My first APRA conference was during COVID; therefore, it was virtual. It will be exciting this year as it will be live and I will, hopefully, be able to meet some of the people that I have talked to virtually.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

I would love to go to Montana (specifically Glacier National Park). My husband and I love to hike, fish, and enjoy nature.

Would you rather have a personal chef, personal housekeeper, or personal chauffeur?

Personal housekeeper - hands down. I find cleaning the house takes up too much of my time that I could be doing other things.

I ended up loving the job and then worked as a phone center manager for a few colleges as my first job out of college! I was introduced to prospect research while working with the advancement offices of the schools I worked and I knew that’s what I wanted to transition to. I love that I still get to have an impact in fundraising for the university but in a more behind the scenes way!

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

The benefit of cats! I have two DSH tigers and they are amazing.

What are you reading now?

I love to read and am always reading more than one book a time! Currently, I am reading Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker which is a study of a family that had 6 children diagnosed with schizophrenia and I am listening to What Happened to You? by Oprah and Bruce Perry. I also just finished A Little Life by Hanya Yangihara which is VERY long and VERY sad but so gorgeously written and thought provoking.

How many hours do you get to the airport before a flight?

I am one of the weird people that actually like hanging out in airports so if I am traveling alone, I usually get to the airport 3 hours or more before I need to! When I travel with my husband, he makes me be a little more reasonable with my timing

Do you think iced coffee should only be consumed in the summer or all year round?

ALL YEAR ROUND! I will drink iced coffee even if its blizzarding outside!

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

I got into prospect research because I was always intrigued by the work my wife, Catherine Smythe Zajc (2004 recipient of the Anne E. Mayer Distinguished Service Award) did. I’ve always enjoyed research incorporated the basics in my days running an Annual Fund. When Hospice of the Western Reserve advertised for a Prospect Researcher and I was hired, I joined “the family business.”

What was your first nonprofit job?

Clerical Assistant for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Pittsburgh, 2018.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

Not so much career advice, or advice at all, but a compliment from an executive recruiter who I know. He was impressed that I was quick to admit when I did not know something, and that I’d go look for the answer or point the person in the right direction – something he found in his experience to be hard for most people to do. Given that I’ve always been a “knowledge is power” kind of mindset, it actually surprised me that I had that growth as a person that early in my life.

What would be the first thing you'd do if you won the lottery?

Do a happy dance, then get a good attorney.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing it?

When I was in High school, I knew I wanted to work at Dynamic Catholic (back then The Matthew Kelly Foundation). I applied for multiple positions when I graduated college but did not get any of them. A few months later, I received a call asking if I would be interested in a position in development. I quit my current job the next day, before even receiving an official offer, because I knew it was where I was supposed to be.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

The people. I work with some of the most amazing and supportive people. Many of my co-workers are some of my closest friends, including two who were bridesmaids in my wedding.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Pittsburg 2018 and I was honored to be able to present as well as meet Nathan Fay, author of Precision Prospect Development. :)

Would you rather have your dishes or clothes be magically clean?

Definitely dishes. I do not mind laundry, I do not mind loading, and emptying the dishwasher but I hate dishes that need washed in the sink like pots, pans and specialty items.

What skill would you like to master?

Salesforce. It is such a powerful tool. I am working on my admin certification, but that is honestly only the tip of the iceberg for SalesForce.

How did you get into fundraising and/or prospect research?

After college, I took a job at the Columbus Symphony working on the tele-fundraising team. Eventually I ended up at the University of Cincinnati Foundation on the annual fund team. After a few years, I moved to the research team. I had no idea what they did but the researcher who was retiring told me I should apply! I have to thank Jim Holzbach for taking a chance on me!

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Dallas in 2003. I had just started my prospect research role in June so attending the new researchers’ symposium in July was great! Learned so much!

What are you reading now?

The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World by Dorie Clark.

How many hours do you get to the airport before a flight?

Two. I’d rather read or grab a snack than stress about making it to the gate on time!

Is pineapple an acceptable pizza topping?

Yes. The only food that doesn’t belong on pizza are eggs.

What was your first nonprofit job?

Children’s is my first and only nonprofit job so far.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do or where you work?

Serving the mission of the organization, and getting to do it in such an interesting way. I hadn’t known Prospect Research existed as career until I was in it, and every day I get to play detective and learn about people’s lives.

When/where was your first Apra conference?

Mid-Atlantic Researchers Conference (MARC) in 2011 in New York City. I learned so many important things at the New Researchers Symposium, and it really gave me confidence to grow in this profession.

Do you think iced coffee should only be consumed in the summer or all year round?

All year round! Coffee tastes better cold in my opinion!

Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Billy Joel! He will always be my favorite.

Foundation and corporate research can be “easier” than individual prospect research in many ways. These funders, unlike individuals, usually state what they are interested in funding and tell prospective grantees how to apply.

Many foundations have websites with their giving interests detailed. They usually note if they accept applications, what the process is, and what types of organizations and projects they support. For those foundations that do not spell out their interests and processes, you may need to use one of several free or subscription-based databases that provide information on Request for Proposals (RFPs) issued by funders, grant histories (search by keyword, geography, recipients, year, etc.), or access to their 990s (list of directors, staff, and general process/deadline information).

For corporate research, again, the company website is the best place to start for general information on the business, locations, and the leadership/board. See the list below for some additional sources of corporate information. Keep in mind that private companies can be more difficult to research! To determine giving interests, look for Giving, Corporate or Social Responsibility, Community, Citizenship, or something similar. If the information isn’t obvious, do a search on their website for “Giving” or “Contribution” and review their News or Media pages for recent press releases about recent contributions or their recent Social Responsibility annual report. Some companies, in addition to a corporate giving program, have a corporate foundation with its own website that state guidelines, application processes, and deadlines.

Once you have found the information you need, be sure to document it in your database. Are you tracking philanthropic interests, giving to other organizations, application deadlines, key decision makers, and other key data points? Consider creating profile or summary templates similar to individual profiles that cover the information your gift officers need to know – what do they support, what is the process, and who, if anyone, in your organization is connected to them.

Philanthropy News Digest RFP Bulletin Sign up for RFP email alerts or search RFPs by subject or keyword.

GuideStar (Free and Subscription). Search for organization’s 990.

ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer (Free). Search 990s by organization, people, or full-text.

Grant Forward (Subscription). Funding opportunities.

GrantStation (Subscription). Free RFP alerts.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy (Subscription includes access to GrantStation).

ProposalCENTRAL Science/research focused. Can review RFPs/opportunities for free.

Corporate Research Project Older resource, but could be helpful in pointing you in the right direction, especially with public company and SEC filings.

Mentoring with OPRN

Your greatest career asset is often your knowledge capital! Taking stock in your strengths and weaknesses and developing both will help you and your future.

A great way to grow is to ask for a mentor or to become one yourself.

A mentor can help you with current projects and assignments, coach you through new areas of growth and share their field experience.

They can provide encouragement and be a sounding board for your ideas.

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools you can possess, and one that is attainable by seeking new ways to learn. Having a mentor can help you establish goals for the near and the long term. The mentoring process can raise your awareness about the possibilities for your future.

Your mentor can be a great asset to career growth, but if you have experience, being a mentor is also a wonderful way to grow. Not only can you find satisfaction by helping others, but you learn by teaching. Building new relationships, helping others learn from your experience and sharing ways to help them problem solve are often extremely rewarding!.

Both mentors and those they mentor benefit in a variety of ways. Sharing ideas and experiences with each other will often result in increased confidence. As you progress, people will notice in interviews, time with your boss or with your staff. People will begin to notice a change, and eventually, those in your sphere will begin relate and perceive you in a different light.

To schedule mentoring time, you and your mentor/mentee can decide what works best for you after an initial meeting on the phone, through facetime or in person. The relationship you build together is to be built on mutual trust, respect and communication. It requires both parties to meet regularly to exchange ideas, discuss goals and celebrate progress. Even if you have an as-needed basis relationship, checking in with each other at set times to touch base is important.

OPRN has a great mentoring program that helps mentors and those who desire a mentor to connect. Many organizations will allow you to be mentored or to mentor someone in your industry on company time. Ask your supervisor what your organizational policy might be. If not, volunteering off the clock offers the same great rewards and mutual benefit.

The Purple Dress of Development by Guest Blogger Sarah Richards

In 2015 a photo of a dress went viral when viewers disagreed on whether the dress was black and blue or white and gold. The phenomenon showcased the difference in human color perception. Yes, a difference of perception. Views of the dress were not right or wrong, they simply had different perceptions. Sound familiar? Let’s put this in the perspective of development. A Prospect Development professional and a Development Officer have a meeting. The Prospect Development professional thinks a donor should be asked to support the cause with a $1,000,000.00 gift. But, the Development Officer thinks the same donor should be asked to make a gift of $500,000.00 to further the mission. They are talking about the same donor, so why do they come up with different gift suggestions? Similar, to the color of the dress, the Prospect Development professional and the Development Officer have different perceptions.

The common perception differences between Prospect Development Professionals and Development Officers led a team of Prospect Development Professionals in Ohio to conduct a survey to look deeper into these different perceptions. The individuals who conducted this survey were connected through a common Prospect Development group called OPRN (Ohio Prospect Research Network). The survey was led by Sarah Richards from The Dynamic Catholic Institute, Jane Owsley from The University of Cincinnati Foundation, Kimberly Rodstrom from Kent State University with special thanks to Becky Fullmer from the University of Cincinnati Foundation. These four women came from various different organizations and backgrounds which helped to look at the survey and the data from various viewpoints.

145 people participated in the survey. 71% of respondents were Prospect Development Professionals and 29% were Development Officers. Overall, respondents were most likely to be female prospect development professionals having been in their career 10+ years and working for urban organizations in higher education located in Ohio. However, overall respondents still had a good varied background of individuals, locations and organizations represented.

Overall both Development Officers and Prospect Development Professionals said that prior giving was the most important factor considered when deciding the size of a gift to ask a donor to make. Followed by affinity to the organization and then hard assets. However, the order of those three factors varied when broken down by organization type, male vs. female and Development Officers vs. Prospect Development Professionals.

But everyone is different in the way they view different factors in determining a donor’s ask amount. Thus, it is still helpful for Prospect Development Professionals to know what indicators are most important to a Development Officer so they can provide leverage when Prospect Development Professionals share information about a prospect. For example, if a particular Development Officer values and rates a prospect higher based on hard assets, highlight a prospect's hard assets in the meeting.

In the survey, communication style and preferences were also evaluated. For both Development Officers and Prospect Development Professionals, in-person strategy sessions were the most preferred way to share information when determining a prospect ask amount. However, when looking at the second prefered style of communication, Development Officer’s preferred email and Prospect Development Professionals prefer notes in the database. Looking at the different ways both perform their jobs, this makes sense. Development Officers are often on the road meeting with donors and it is easier for them to communicate by email. Similarly, Prospect Development Professionals spend most of their time in the database.

Overall, affinity to an organization, especially prior giving, was the leading factor considered when determining the ask amount, above identified capacity. But everyone is different and it is important to highlight the factors that are valued most by the specific individual. Additionally, in-person strategy sessions were the most preferred way to share information when determining a prospect ask amount. But if those cannot take place, Development Officers prefer to receive information by email and Prospect Development Professionals prefer to share information by entering it in the database. The insight found through this survey is interesting but it is important to open a conversation in your office to determine what factors and communication styles works best for the individuals on your team because black and blue or white and gold it is still a beautiful dress.

We know intrinsically that the work we do has a high value for our organizations. We know the work we do is indispensable for a healthy fundraising program. We know that without our impact, our organizations would raise a fraction of what they currently raise. Understanding and expressing that value has for a long time been hard to pin down and express in a way that elevates. Until now. Precision Prospect Development shows us the way. It translates our work into value and in a language the senior leadership can understand and lays out strategies and tactics to help you achieve maximum success.

This inability to articulate our value in the language of senior leadership has been a major roadblock for our profession. It is one of the leading reasons why there is such little representation of Prospect Development folks at the senior leadership table. If you run some basic searches on LinkedIn or Google, you will find that there are only a handful of folks at the AVP or VP level in our field. If you run the same search for every other department in a development shop, be it annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate giving, foundation giving, principal giving, you will find that the complete opposite is true. For practically every organization that has a mature or large development shop with at least 30 employees, there will exist an AVP and/or VP in each of these areas.

This doesn’t sit well with me. This has to change. Why are we so underrepresented at the table? Why do we need to have the occasional champion on the front-lines write articles on their blog or on LinkedIn, cheerleading our value proposition to their peers as if our value proposition needs defending, as if it is not widely accepted amongst all organizations that Prospect Development is an essential piece of the development puzzle, and that to muzzle us by not giving us a seat at the table is detrimental to an organization’s health? An understanding of The Why can help us to quickly correct this travesty so that future generations of Prospect Development folks will be amazed to learn that their pioneering predecessors ever had anything but the seat of honor at the leadership table.

We need to change our categorization in the hierarchy of development from cost center to revenue generator.

Prospect Development is a revenue generator. We are in the relationship business. We are highly valuable to the bottom-line and our work has a direct impact on dollars in the door. Adding more boots on the ground is not always the answer when a revenue increase is sought after. Increasing your prospect development staff so that you have healthy balance of researcher to field officer is vital to the success of our organizations.

We are in a unique position in our organizations in that we interact with all units. We are like a central hub connected to every program. We have the ability to influence and impact beyond any other unit in our organizations. We must harness this power with a focus on the bottom-line as much as possible. If we think of ourselves as fundraisers and operate our programs in accordance with this focus, the sky is the limit on what we can achieve.

Mistakes are opportunities!

Errors and mistakes happen but are not the end of the world. Often, gift officers view researchers as data geeks. And, that’s OK, too! In their recent webinar, “Did I Do That?,” board member Beth Havens and former board president Regina Alhassan teamed up to explore owning your space as the team's data ambassador and how to turn common missteps into opportunities to improve systems and relationships.

Infused with American pop-culture, the 60-minute webinar had over 50 participants with members actively engaged, asking questions and sharing comments. Top tips include editing each other's work; letting it rest – review work with fresh eyes after 30 minutes or the next day; taking a walk to clear your mind; and using a formal request system which offers a menu of 3-5 research products. Kudos to Beth and Regina for representing our chapter in Apra’s annual Chapters Share The Knowledge Week.
